Klimt 1918 are a band I've previously never heard of. They play a very
melancholic metal/rock with gothic elements and a tad of doom at times. It
would probably appeal to fans of latter day Anathema and Katatonia. This
isn't the most challenging album to listen to; in fact, the full-length
will probably click straight away, and even though it sounds extremely
familiar, I still find the urge to play this record a lot. Maybe it's
because Klimt 1918 have released a near flawless record of this style of
music, whilst not being groundbreaking.
After a very odd field recording for an intro, the actual album starts.
The music is very hopeful sounding with some typical Katatonia style
riffing and very good clean vocals which are heavily accented. However,
this really appeals to me for some reason. I can't explain it, they aren't
perfect by any means, they just sound really good and are perfectly suited
to this style of music. At times, there are sections that really irritate
me, they sound too upbeat and positive for my taste, like the beginning of
"Parade Of Adolescence"; yet later in the same track there is an awesome
riff that wouldn't sound out of place on an all out doom-metal record.
This pattern continues itself throughout the rest of the album, hitting in
places, completely missing in others, but as I mentioned, this is probably
due to the fact that this isn't my preferred style of music. In all, I'm
not sure if I would recommend this to most doom-metal fans, maybe a few,
particularly those of the lighter styles of doom like latter Anathema,
Katatonia and possibly My Dying Bride. Extreme doom fans should steer well
clear. Either way, at the end of the day, Klimt 1918 have released a very
solid record with excellent vocal work that I really (if a little guiltily)
enjoy.
