My Sixth Shadow/Klimt 1918/Child on a rope

07/12/2003, Roma, Coetus Pub

As already written in the 'News', when I thought to have lost all hope of coming back to Rome for the gig above-mentioned, together with some friends instead I've managed to arrange a whole day to spend in our capital (though I went to the gig all alone...). Of course, I would've preferred spending there all the three days for the long week-end of the 8th of December, but I've really nothing to complain about.
After the whole afternoon and part of the evening spent going around in the city, I venture about the streets of Rome, in search of the Coetus Pub. It's very cold and I'm lookin' forward to reach destination. Thanx to the very kind tram-drivers of the capital, I reach the pub safe and sound around 22:30. After a few moments I see Paolo from Klimt 1918 and shortly we enter the place: the pub is small, the stage too, but in the background is playing "Altars of Madness" of Morbid Angel and I feel already well! Then I also meet Alessandro, who tells me about the play-list of their set. I'll meet Davide and Marco right before their performance.

Klimt 1918 are gonna play for second; it's a young act from Gaeta who opens the night, such Child on a Rope that I had never heard talkin' about before. However, I sit in front of the stage (but I hate these places with tables and chairs/benches located right under the stage which don't allow you to stand up during gigs!) and I listen to them with interest, even if the kind of death/black proposed by the 5-piece (vox/bass, two guitars, drums and keys) is still a lil' bit unripe.

Tonite My Sixth Shadow are the headliners, therefore Klimt 1918 haven't so much time at disposal for their set that foresees the same play-list of end June but this time, further to "Stalingrad Theme", it'll also be excluded the title-track "Undressed Momento". However, I have to say that this time I feel more involved during their set, there is also people who know the songs and even sing 'em... so they keep me company! Then the four are superb on that small stage and for me it's still a huge emotion hearing them playing live once again. "That Girl" opens their show and the sound is fairly good; I'm literally ravished by Marco's performance and Davide (very smart!) at bass. This time Marco looks a bit more decided, especially in the vocals (though he won't miss again to mistake some verses in a couple of songs, he, he, he... ) and the bass lines by Davide, as on the album, are killer! Nevertheless Alessandro at guitar and the upsetting Paolo at drums aren't less than them.

Follow the more free and easy "Pale Song" and "Parade of Adolescence" (dedicated to me, since I came back to hear them playing once again from Florence; practically the most divine song of the whole album... what a honour!), the magisterial "We don't need no music", with a sensational Marco singing the Italian verses, "Naif Watercolour", intense, immense, extraordinary (and to the last I hope the band will play the former version with the verses of the Beatles, but it's gone badly even this time...), and "If only you could see me now". Unfortunately the end of the gig is at hand and the band proposes the new song "They were wed by the sea" (this title is really charming, isn't it?), which I well remembered from the previous show at the Jungle Club and the last and exciting cover "By this river" by Brian Eno. And people have appreciated for real, have clapped hands, have sung... I say it again: it was such a great emotion!

Then it's turn of My Sixth Shadow, which are in six on stage and seem to be a lil' bit narrow... and it also seems like they wanna play all nite long: they don't stop anymore, he, he! I knew them more than anything else by name; I chanced to listen to them on some compilation, but there was that voice which doesn't drive me so much mad. Even tonite the opinion will more or less remain the same, but the goth'n'roll proposed by the band is pleasing, even if the songs after all sound a lil' bit the same. I should listen to them more carefully to better judge their music.

The night isn't over yet and I remain on the place in company of the guys from Klimt 1918, new and old friends... there is also Carmelo from Novembre (great! If only they could've played as well!).  Obviously I pinch again the playbill of the gig...

In the end, musically's been a very nice night: it was really worth coming back to hear Klimt 1918 playing!

P.S.: A huge thanx to Paolo for the lift to the Jungle Club!
