Dark Day Festival - VIII ed., pt. 1

Eighth edition of Dark Day Festival, brilliantly organized by the guys of The Shadow Realm and Feronia (the symbol shop for the whole dark movement Milanese). For the first tranche of this eighth edition, the organizers have well thought to bet on the variety of the proposal, that is winning at the same time, gathering some of the most appreciated bands (emergent and not) from their own respective sphere in the big hotchpotch of the dark side.
Because of several technical and logistical problems, unfortunately the timetable of the
::: Dark Day Festival :::bands sees a drastic revolution, not as regards the order of apparition, but as to the show times. The Romans Dope Stars Inc. - whom with their debut  "://Neuromance", are laying the dancefloors of half Europe waste! - open the dances (and it's exactly the case to use such word)! In spite of the shortness of their performance, D.S.I. don't disappoint at all the crowd's expectations, reproposing in impeccable way the classics from their debut above said, leading to the big waited 'movement' in the hall. To mention, the great determination that the four Romans display on stage, even showing a huge instrumental skill, to the prejudice of those thinking that dark-industrial-ebm (although D.S.I. propose a style which goes further such definition, including also some traces of punk-glam!) it's not 'played' music. Convincing the work done by Victor Love (even singer in My Sixth Shadow) whom with his vocal interpretation, sometimes rough, others melodic, gives greater emphasis to the vibes wisely drawn by the duet Alex Vega  (even axe-man of Klimt 1918) at guitar and Grace Khold at synths. It was a pity for the short time given to the band that, however, leaves the stage with a full marks promotion!
... Just the time to organize the change of set and Alex Vega returns on stage, this time as Alessandro Pace (even if still wearing the live clothes of Dope Stars Inc.), because it's the moment of changing vibes and giving life to the emotional world of Klimt 1918. The debut on a large scale in Milan is not so lucky for the four Romans, because of some initial problems which delay the beginning of their set. However, when all is solved and the music starts 'talking', we soon understand that the wait (of tonight and in the lapse of time of 2 records already released) immediately finds what of being rewarded: the sad and a bit retrò melodies, typical of Klimt, pervade the hall, introduced by a dispatch which announces the end of war (subject of the second full-lenght of the band, "Dopoguerra"). It's unnecessary saying that the musical performance results great, although not lacking in mistakes. In the beginning, what suffers the most is the voice of Marco Soellner, who perhaps was a bit excited in the opening. But once engaged the right gear, all returns to its place and from the stage starts throbbing the pathos that only Klimt 1918 are able to infuse. Emotions in music... a bittersweet taste able to send the human soul back in time, to white & black visions, to a past life, experienced and more genuine, that the world of today doesn't know and will ever know! Visions, tastes and sensations which, alas, fade away in a flash when, because of reaching the time limits, the band's forced to brutally cut half play-list and letting the stage to the following band in the bill. Next time will go better guys!
A new change of sonorities expects the crowdy audience of Rainbow tonight. In fact, once the set of Klimt of 1918 is over, directly from England arrive Nosferatu, seminal act, daughter of the second wave of dark-wave which ran over Europe and U.K. especially at the end of the 80s and early 90s. As per tradition of the band, the same arrives on stage with an essentialist punk attitude and as a three-piece (guitar, bass/vocals and drums, further to pre-recorded parts), the band of Louis Dewray & Damien DeVille proposes its psychedelic visions of life, hallucinating good part of the audience and making 'em fall in sick macabre dances. But on the long time the cadenced and monotonous sonorities of the band lead (and I write this from my strictly personal point of view and liking) into a bit of boredom! The songs, almost all the same, resent of a certain tiredness and lead with them a certain  taste of old-fashioned, though being excellent to annihilate and giving that feeling of oppression which followers of a such dark-goth look for. In the end, an appreciated show by the most, but surely not the best of the night.

The
conclusion of Dark Day of this ending 2005 is up to an important headliner, even if not exempt of contrasting aspects. Directly from the Norwegian lands and for the only Italian date, arrives the shammer Andy LaPlegua, not with the well known Icon Of Coil, but with his more evel creature, and namely those Combichrist, one-man band in every respect, according to Andy's intentions, fit for giving vent to the more extreme tendencies of himself. Without many frills, Andy invades the stage and begins throwing up the audience all the rage of his violent and discordant industrial-ebm, helped only by the use of synths. It's awful seeing one only man able to create such a mass of violence, makin' move a lot of people in wild hysterical and epileptic dances and for whom the wide stage of Rainbow  isn't enough, even going down among the crowd and continuing among that his wicked destructive project. Even if difficult, Andy's proposal as Combichrist results more enjoyable and 'utilizable' alive, especially from certain fans of techno music and habitués of the most 'risky' dancefloors, that in occasions like these cannot but find their fair satisfaction.
At the end of the 'hard' exhibition of Andy, it's time of balances; these, in spite of the initial problems, can't be but more than positive: variety and good quality of music, rich contour of deepenings with the chance to buy records and fashion accessories, good extra musical entertainment by
Feronia, a lot of beautiful people who quietly has taken time for having some fun... in short, a night to remember with pleasure and that we await to live again soon in a new edition of Dark Day in Milan.
