Around
17:00 my friend Angelo and me reach the centre of Ferrara and immediately
head for the well known Castello Estense, since the gig is held exactly in the
picturesque square hosting such old building. The square lies still wide
open for everybody and so we decide to sit somewhere for resting a bit in
the shades,
after driving on the highway, awaiting that maybe someone from Editors come out or at least that Klimt1918
arrive, since they took a wrong road and are late. Obviously we must even have a walk inside the castle,
since the gates are still
open, as well as
around the walls,
surrounded by a typical moat of that period with water inside, really nice,
shoting some pictures. When
our walk is over and we stop once again under the stage, we notice a small
white van coming, from which get out our heroes from Rome: ''It's
paniiic!'', says Paolo Soellner when I greet 'em, while Marco comes to chat. Just the time to reach the place and get out the van and they had already started unloading their instruments and setting
everything on stage, since they're late and must rush to make the
soundcheck. So we stay there for seeing and hearing what they'll do.
In the meantime the guys from Editors pass next to us, so rapidly, Tom and Chris
especially, under their black sunglasses, while I greet 'em with the hand
as I still was a teenager:
the drummer Ed greets me too waving his hand, and the
bass-player Russel smiling.
Tom and Chris go pretty ahead, but
Angelo will be able to shot a picture to the first right when he turns in the distance. Marco tries first ''Nightdriver'', with his singing only.
Meanwhile I just kid a lil' with Paolo from Kardia - who replaces Davide at bass
only for this date, since he's traveling in England - as I'm exactly in
front of him right under the stage and ask him if he has well studied the songs
the band will perform this evening.
He says 'so and so' and that perhaps
he will improvise something and he feels kinda strange playin' bass only,
without a mike in front of him as usual (he's the vocalist/bass-player
from Kardia in fact). I told him to pay attention and not
to exchange his
place with Marco during the show :) Marco sings even ''Skygazer''.
Then it's the turn of bass and drums and ''Skygazer'' again and after
guitars and voices of both Marco and Francesco, with ''The breathtaking days (Via Lactea)''
and ''Because
of you, tonight''. It's just a pity that exactly two of the most
beautiful songs they played during the soundcheck - ''Nightdriver'' and ''Because of you, tonight'' -
will be excluded from the set-list of the show. And right when they start
playing all together, we're gently invited by the guys from the Security
to go outside, since it's almost time to clear the square and start
preparing for the event. We enter around 20:00,
trying to avoid some souvenirs of those pigeons cooing above our heads,
and reach the stage gaining position in the 2nd row, in front of Paolo/Kardia
as during the soundcheck exactly, but its' good the same, for there is a
good sight. A couple of djs try to cheer up our wait with some music, but
vainly. We're lookin' forward for the show to start. Among other things,
though weather forecast said that there would've been overcast sky and
that it would've probably rained, it's such a beautiful day; it'll rain just a few drops after the
show, only a vent of warm.
Klimt1918 start a few minutes after 21:30
(as Paolo preannounced after taking place under the stage),
first with an
Intro, followed by their arrival on stage and by
''The breathtaking days (Via Lactea)''. Well, yes,
the set-list doesn't change a single word neither this time or better
still, this time even ''Rachel'' (which however I don't think it was
foreseen for this evening) and the last ''True love is the oldest fear'',
are excluded, because of lack of time. Therefore follow one another "Skygazer" (very
short clip by Angelo),
''Snow of
'85''
(there
is a live clip by gloria978 taken from the tube),
"The Graduate"
(and even
the live clip shot for this song by
microssl) and "Ghost of a tape listener".
All the songs are well executed and the sound down the stage is alright,
we can hear well, both Marco's voice, inspired as usual, and Francesco's
choirs, as well as all the instruments. And then there are some nice red &
yellow light effects which enrichen their performance. Paolo/Kardia got on
quite well, although the girls who stand in the fornt line will butcher
him with criticism, without even knowing that he's not the original
bass-player of the band, poor guy. And will even butcher their musical
proposal, defining it too much derivative and will accuse the band of
plagiarism for the case ''The Graduate'', you know.
For the rest,
among the crowd there is who sincerely clap hands and praise them and who
merely does it because is lookin' forward to stop playing to make room to
the headliners of the night, Editors. It's always like this when an almost
unknown act plays before such a big live band. By the way Angelo and me
take part more actively possible, especially me, with my arms always in
the air and singing loud continuosly, ha, ha, ha! However, when the
show is over, Marco and Francesco say that, although on stage sounds didn't
seem so good, the crowd's reply has been positive and even directly from
the stage say that they're glad to have the chance now to perform
themselves on the same stage when Editors are gonna play later, but where
even other great bands such as Interpol or Sigur Ros have already played
and that they've personally seen exactly there in the past editions of
this Festival, gaining some claps more from audience. I'm happy for them if they think it like this, but
from where I stood and from what I read so far
in these couple of days, the opinion has been another. I just hope that at
least some more favourably disposed towards them, will give 'em a chance.
Unfortunately after just
thirty minutes they're forced to leave us, because it's almost about time
for Editors to start, welcomed by the whole square at the top of
their voices, me included of course, when a few minutes after 22:30 they
enter the stage of Ferrara, under the open sky, greeting us performing a
brand-new song - though they've already been playing it during these
European summer dates they're helding and therefore someone of us already
know it thanks to internet - that should be entitled ''Bricks and mortar''
(I love this
title !). I don't
know how the fans of the English act will react about these new songs,
where there aren't so many guitars but many synths and hence their musical
style is becoming a lil' more commercial and even dance tune, if I can describe it like this. The voice is always beautiful, verses and chorus are
more or less developped as the oldies, but are involving and furthermore, in my opinion, Tom's got such an
extraordinay voice timbre and a way of performing on stage which everyone
would love, but lookin' at the
guitarist Chris dedicating himself almost
exclusively at synths - and it seemed he was very involved in this role -
as well as the bass-player Russel doing the same in a couple of songs, and
Tom too... I don't know, I got a strange feeling. Probably we will be able
to better judge after listening to the new album that should be released
in Septmber 2009 (and that should be entitled ''In this light on this
evening'').
However I think that what the audience mainly needs tonight is listening to
some old songs and the band gives us what we look for, playing ''The
racing rats'' and ''Lights',
that the crowd sings aloud, now truly enraptured by the four English men.
What I really like of Editors is the incredible energy that their music
and the lyrix too give me and though I've already done such a noise during
the set of
Klimt1918, I do exactly the same during that hour and a quarter
only that Editors play, really a short time if I have to be honest, even if it's
exactly the same lenght they played those couple of times I had the chance
to catch 'em live before. But I think their set is so hectic that after
one hour they're even quite done to a turn they must leave us, he, he, he.
So follow one another songs taken from their records, such as ''The racing
rats'',
''Munich'', cheered, ''An end
has a start'', that's just another anthem, ''Camera'', so intense which
gimme the creeps and others, as well as another couple of new songs, ''The big exit''
and ''Eat raw meat: Blood
drool'', which more or less are developped on the same rhythms of the
brand-new song performed in the opening, with synths here and there. For
the encore it's turn of the b-side ''You are fading'', followed by
''Fingers
in the factories'' and the last ''Papillon'', another new song, namely the
first new one I listened some days before the show which shocked me a
lil', but that however I'm confident it'll become soon a crazy hit,
because of such a really catchy chorus and vocal melody in pure Editors
style, though the musical basis is newly a synths pad. These four guys,
singularly taken, are all outstanding, especially Russel at bass, who is fundamental for the music of the band with
his bass lines, but that mad chip
of the vocalist/guitarist Tom especially, who incessantly passes from the
mike and guitar, once at the piano, then at synths, all with such an
energy that I've seldom found in any other front-man. It's just a pity
that he doesn't talk at all between one song and the other, a skimpy 'thanks'
apart here and there. He talks so seldom that he's not even able to say how
beautiful is the place where they're playing tonight:
''It's... It's!''. Ha, ha, ha, alright, we understood you the same,
no need to hear you explain!
Then before midnight, once that Editors
stopped playing, we move towards the same side of the stage where we
noticed Klimt1918 arriving, to see if we're able to talk to them and even
with the headliners. Paolo from Kardia arrives first and in the meantime
we're able to meet even Chris and Ed from Editors. I tell Ed I'm the one
who greeted 'em in the afternoon and he answers he remembers, of course. I
ask both if they liked Klimt1918 and they say so. Tom will say the same
about one hour later, though he seems in a rush. I forgot to ask it to
Russel, who however was nice like Chris and
Ed with the fans. When Paolo/Kardia
says goodbye, Marco, Francesco and Paolo Soellner are coming instead - and
the last one gives me the version in vinyl of the last album ''Just in case we'll never
meet again'', and informs me that unfortunately the copies of the ep in cd
are over by now - and therefore I won't be able to tell you anything about
the previously unreleased song ''Blackeberg 1981'', sorry!
Marco says that is such a great satisfaction for him having released an
album of the band in vinyl.
We talk about their set, how has gone and what
the audience thought about, of the set-list that they're never able to
diversify, because of the many daily commitments with work and life in
general and about the time it would take to be able to rehearse different
songs, as well as of the fact that their performance at Santo Rock Fest.
of the past Saturday didn't go so well, because of the rain actually. Then
Marco speaks about a next live date around Frosinone, that is near Rome,
but for me it's already a miracle if I've been able to get a half day free
to go to see them and Editors too in Ferrara and I'm very very happy like
this, trust me.
Thanks to Angelo for coming with me
and keeping me company, especially coming back to Florence, since the highway in
Bologna was closed and it took a lot of time more to reach home, as well as for all
the beautiful pictures he shot that night that I'm lookin' forward to getting to
show you on these pages
(now you can find just a few ones taken from
his
album on flickr, but I wait for the complete
cd...), to Paolo for the vynil of the last album and the other
guys from Klimt1918, Paolo from Kardia included, for the nice
talk after the show and even to Editors and their outstanding performance as
always.
