Springtime Fest. - 09/05/2004

Sesto S. Giovanni (Milano), Indian's Saloon

con Node † Klimt 1918 † Edenshade † Gory Blister † Lifend

Nothing better than celebrating exactly one year from the release of "Undressed Momento" by Klimt 1918 going to attend their gig. And then it's also a good chance to catch a couple of bands I've not been listening to alive for some years in action once again (Gory Blister and Node) and listening to another couple that I don't know yet so much, but that seem to Click to enlargereally be promising for that lil' I've been able to hear (Edenshade and Greyswan; it's a pity that these last ones won't play, as Marco from Klimt 1918 tells me later).
Around 17:00 I reach the place and thanks to Joe & Raffa from Gory Blister I can immediately enter the club... exactly when Klimt 1918 are gonna make the soundcheck! Although there is one band less playing, it's already late on the schedule and therefore each band will have to shorten a bit its own set.

And so, among various greetings, one talk and another, it's 19:00 and the openers Lifend arrive on stage. I know about them only because they're gonna play tonite, since I've never had the chance of hearing them before now. At first I think they play brutal, considered the white banners stained of red blood hanging down from the mikes, but after a short sampled intro the band starts playing and I realize that the five-piece (female lead vocalist, male vocalist/guitar, male vocalist/bass, a second guitar and drums - and the drummer looks much like Alessandro from Klimt 1918 as Marco pointed me out, he, he!) proposes a quiet death metal with doom-goth reminescences. Now and then female vox are combined with the screaming ones of the guitarist and sometimes even with those more growling of the bass-player; it's a pity that the female vox can't be heard so much.

About one hour after, Gory Blister attack with "A gout from the scar" from their full-lenght album "Art Bleeds" that has finally seen the light after 'ages' and for me now it gets really serious. Actually the song is pretty old, but even if years have passed, it always makes its own good sensation. Raffa_springtimefestFurther to the veterans Joe & Raffa, respectively drums and guitar, there are two new buys, Adry (vocals), really hectic (that will also perform a couple of pieces together with the previous singer of the band, Domenico if I'm not wrong, by the voice definitely more growling, but insane the same) and Fredrick at bass. The death metal proposed by the four-piece it's quite technical and varies a lot; in some passages reminds me of some American extreme acts such as Death, but even something of Cannibal Corpes and Morbid Angel, especially in the slower parts and in the 30 minutes at their disposal they play songs taken from the album said above, as well as some less recent ones taken from the previous mini-cd "Cognitive Sinergy".

Around 21:00 is the turn of Edenshade, who open their set in an unusual way and namely with a cover: that stunning blow of "Blackened" by Metallica!Stefano_springtimefest Then they also go on with a handful of songs taken from their debut album "Ceramic placebo for a faintheart", though the undersigned only knows the one reserved for the final, "The pathology of incest". Their style is definitely aggressive, but a lil' bit more melodic if compared to the band who played before, even strong in a good scenical presence and in an excellent combination between extreme and clean vox. It's just a pity that the voice of Lorenzo can't be well heard in these last ones. A band that I'll absolutely have to hear again!

It's 22:00 and is finally the long waited 'momento' of the adored Klimt 1918 that as usual arrive on stage all well dressed and with ties (because of 'the show'...); of course Paolo wears a lil' bit more casual, but he plays drums!Davide_springtimefest Unlike the tragic soundcheck during the which we couldn't hear so well the voice of Marco, fot the perfomance things turn out definitely better, both vocally and musically. Furthermore there is a good part of the kidz that's here only for them and that like me well know the songs, so I also feel more involved. The play-list is more or less the same as the previous gigs, even if this time, due to lack of time, the songs taken from "Undressed Momento" which they were used to play live, but excluded this time are well two (and namely "Naif Watercolour" - greatly demanded at the end of the show - and the title-track itself).
Tonite Marco mistakes less verses than usual (:D) and however this time his voice is still more beautiful and lovable. Besides, the marvellous four look much Marco_springtimefestmore ran in on stage now; on the other hand, lately they've played enough around and the results are evident! Thus "That Girl", "Pale Song" and "Parade of Adolescence" follow one another. Paolo at drums is really entertaining! Apart that he plays in a masterly manner (absolutely killer in the final part of the following "We don't need no music", greatly sung by the crowd and dedicated by Marco to all the bands on the bill), it's sooo funny seeing him at work, always smiling and playing with passion, he, he! From the debut album then they also play "If only you could see me now". Alessandro_springtimefest
I hoped they would've also played the title-track from the new album, "Dopoguerra", but before the gig the guitarist Alessandro had already told me that during the concert before, at  Alpheus in Rome, they had just improvised it... so I hope it'll be for the next time!
Nevertheless there is still room for a new song, however already proposed alive and namely "They were wed by the sea", as well as for the unfailing cover "By this river", that I wouldn't mind if they decided to include even on the record. Praises, praises, infinite praises for this short but intense performance!

In the end it's time for the headliners of the nite and namely Node, who are exactly from Milan and good part of the kidz is deliberately here for them (even if actually I expected a higher concourse). Node_springtimefestAuthors of a very fast and valid death/thrash metal, the band offers a heated show, also flavoured by the cover of "Territory" by Sepultura (man, it were ages that I hadn't been singing it!), nice talks between the front-man Daniel and the other guitarist and the presence of the crowd who knows even their latest songs, with pleasure of the band itself.

It's already past midnight and if I wanna sleep at least 3 or 4 hours, better hurry up with the greetings and making for the highway towards home. Again thanks a lot to Joe & Raffa from Gory Blister for having me allowed to enter for free and to the promoters of this springtime fest. (we need more nights like this!). What a pity for the absence of Greyswan and for the concourse not so much huge... and for remaining without the t-shirt I liked of Klimt 1918, since it's been literally sold like hot cakes!
