Klimt 1918 - 07/05/2005

Roma, Jungle Club

In these last two weeks have happened so many things, that I never had enough time to fully realize the release of "Dopoguerra", Click to enlargenor of the gig that Klimt 1918 would've held in the capital after a few days only, to present the new songs alive. By the way, I'm able to come back to Rome even this time. Together with my fellow travellers (Francesca, Silvio & Chiara, whom I hail and thank so much for everything!), we reach the Jungle around 22:00, when the club is still desert, though in the well know Roman area of Testaccio there is already a great bustle and is hard to find where parking our car!
After a while Marco comes out, already well dressed and with tie for the night, although he hasn't made up his mind yet about which pair of shoes exactly putting... Lil' by lil, even Paolo, Alessandro and Davide reach us and, surprise-surprise, tonight there is even Francesco at keyboards! And this guy isn't an unknown face to me; infact he's the former keyboard player from Spiritual Front, whom I've already had the chance to catch live a couple of times two years ago, when Alessandro was still part of the above-mentioned act. I immediately safeguard myself asking Paolo for a playbill of the gig; it seems that there still are a couple inside the club and, of course, one is for me! Between a chat and another, people are reaching the place and around 23 we begin entering the Jungle.
Klimt 1918 starts finally playing around 23:45.
Marco - click to enlargeAfter the intro with the radio announcement of the liberation which opens "Dopoguerra" and which also introduces the set of tonight, ours begin just like on the new album with the sweeping "They were wed by the sea".  The impact of guitars, in evident style U2, and of the drums is truly great, as well as the bass lines; the problem is that we can't hear the voice so well, technical drawback that unfortunately will compromise the good outcome of the gig. What a pity for real! Click to enlargeYeah, because tonight the band seems a bit shy (or at least Marco looks like this to me) and the fact that the vocals come and go, doesn't help 'em for sure.  Of course, when they propose some songs taken from the debut album, the audience sing with him, but to our regret we can't hear him so well singing the new ones which, in my opinion, turn out even pretty well alive.  There is Giuseppe (drums God!) from Novembre, who attempts to remedy for the situation, but the thing really doesn't work.
Alessandro - click to enlargeThe songs taken from the new album practically follow one after the other, except "Lomo" (while they were about it, they could've played even this one, but the dancing gothic nite of the Jungle impatiently awaits): the nostalgic "Snow of '85" (even performed as encore of the gig), "Rachel", sweet and resolute at the same time,  "Nightdriver", absolutely dreamy and vaguely 'Novembrine', "Because of you, tonight", the title-track "Dopoguerra" and the following "La Tregua" (that stands for 'The Truce' in English). Then a few steps backwards with the solar "Parade of Adolescence" and "Pale Song" taken from "Undressed Momento" and again back to the album just released, with "Sleepwalk in Rome" (and an outstanding Paolo at drums!) and its final crescendo of Italian verses (which I wanna translate you, sooner or later...), though the band strikes up with "That Girl" by mistake, then reserved for the end.
The hour of gig at their disposal ends soon and I'm so sorry because of that marvellous voice - that on this last new record is even more beautiful! - which unfortunately we haven't been able to hear as we would've liked to, hoping that next time it'll go a lil' bit better... even because this week-end they'll attend nothing less than the Wave Gotik Treffen in Leipzig. Cheer up boyzzz!!!
