For this Easter travel o' mine, I've had the wonderful idea to dress me in the style of Klimt 1918, complete with white shirt, black tie and pleated black skirt after the manner of a schoolgirl: the problem is only that spring's came all of a sudden and that both in the car and outside, I have no idea how many degrees there are and I feel too much 'sacrificed' dressed like that. Dear, experienced and consumed first t-shirt of 'Uncomfortable Emotional Music' o' mine, I missed you sooo much... But I have to say that it all suited me really fine (modestly) and that I looked like the lil' sister of Angus Young; I just missed the schoolbag, ha, ha, ha! Around 19:00 I reach Cremona, where I meet my fellow travellers Cristina & Fabio with whom, after having left arms and luggage for the rest of the week-end, we set immediately out for La Sfinge, the club where the gig of Klimt 1918 which I've been waiting for such a long time, is gonna be held. After some vicissitudes, we reach the place around 20:00, exactly when Klimt 1918 are gonna start the soundcheck. Luckily the guy of the club allows us to enter and let us remain inside so, after a quick general greeting to the four on the stage, we seat aT small table to hear the soundcheck. Marco sings "Snow of '85" and "Rachel". Then they try all together "Snow of '85" itself. Every now and then I hear they play "A forest" of The Cure and something of AC/DC, I think, just to strum something while they're adjusting the sounds. The guy at the mixer looks a lil' bit bored of the soundcheck that is taking a long time; the guys of the band don't seem to be very satisfied of the sound that's comin' out instead. The fact is that after a while, one by one get on the stage the other two bands which will play tonight, and namely Demian (and not Shining Fear, as wrongly mentioned on the flyer of the gig) and Sovversivo. Since it's Easter, I present our adored of a small chocolate egg each and I have a short chat with Marco, Paolo and Davide. But none of them introduce me the new guitarist Francesco: I see him keepin' on himselF, he doesn't introduce himself and nevertheless I make his acquaintance, hence it will be for the next time. The point is that I fear he 'twists' too much the old songs and therefore I wanna hear him live first to value his guitar work. I spot the big poster of the night with the image of the girl on the roof, that is different from the flyer here above, but unfortunately at the end of the gig I won't be able to get neither one. I'm gettin' old guys: once I was quicker to take 'em off from the doors or the walls of the clubs, ha, ha, ha! In the meantime, I've after known that Marco has done an interview with Eugenio Crippa of Advent 'zine, that I hope we will be able to read soon. Among other things, Eugenio's also been able to catch Klimt 1918 live the night before, near Como (as I'm here, I just want to say hell-o to him, Daniela, Stefano and Cinzia, big fans of Klimt 1918 and always present!).
Although the dances had to start around 20:00, Demian begin to play about three hours later. Better anyway, so more people reached the club in the meantime (even if honestly I hoped that there could've been much more, considered it was Saturday nite and even more during a holidays period... well, as they say, 'few, but good'), but worse for me that I'm there with a 'lift' who will accomodate me for the night that, dear me, once the set of Klimt 1918 is over, is lookin' forward to go away, which will force me to talk just a lil' with ours and to take right a couple of pictures withMarco and Paolo, among other things shot too closely. At least, you can look at us well in the face, he, he, he! I was saying that Demian open the night: while they were makin' the soundcheck, they reminded me of a sort of budding Lacuna Coil, but a lil' bit more 'core'. During their set, apart this likeness with the above-mentioned act, either for the male vocalist or the female one, they also remind me of the latest Addiction Crew and Linkin' Park too. I've to say that is not my fave style (but long live the early Addiction, especially those of "Doubt the dosage"), but they're good to listen to and during those five or six songs proposed, time passes with pleasure. At the end of their set, they'll also give away for free their demo to all the interested ones and I got a copy too.
After a while follow Sovversivo that from the aggressive monicker, I thought they played thrash/hardcore, but are a powerful and prepared heavy-rock band instead; they propose even a couple of covers, of Savatage, if I well remember, but of Alice Cooper especially, which I find to sing even myself.
It's already very late when Klimt 1918 go on stage (and told me that even the night before they stayed up to the small hours...) and everybody get close to the stage to take more actively part to the show, even exhorted by Marco and Davide, that a couple of times 'threaten' to stop playing, if we don't get closer. They start with one of the most beloved songs taken from the debut album"Undressed Momento", and namely "That girl" that immediately makes the bystanders happy. The sound is okay and the volume doesn't seem so hugely high as during the soundcheck. Follows the nostalgic "Snow of '85", which with that hot it was today and that's even inside the club, brings me back with my memories for a moment, to cooler temperatures and climates, when the between-seasons still existed. After all, the new guitarist doesn't change so much the old songs or better still, so slightly rearranged the songs sound really great and I'm enchanted by hearing him playin'... him, but even the others. A particular praise, in my opinion, goes to Paolo at the drums: though everything moves there behind, he'll frightfully play for the whole set every single track, especially "Sleepwalk in Rome" and "They were wed by the sea". At the end of the set, he's so hot and exhausted that ours won't be neither able to perform the foreseen encore (with "Pale song", performed instead the night before at Motorockas); what a pity! The set goes on with the first new song of the nite, considered that, as Marco himself says, "Dopoguerra" was released two years ago by now and therefore it would be about time to propose something new. I'm curios and listen to this new song very carefully (I don't know if is exactly entitled "Ghost", because on Francesco's play-list pinched at the end of the gig, the title has been barred...; that then was entitled "Ghost of a tape listener" Mery's note, January 2008) and as for the sonorities, reminds me a lot some of the more indie and post-rock solutions already heard on the last record, rather than what done on the debut, but I expected this and considered that lately I've started even myself to get close to such kind of sonorities, I enjoy this new song that definitely pleases me and that gives me a lot of energy! I also think that the second new song which will follow right after, "Skygazer", at least as mentiond on the play-list, got very similar vibes and I'm already lookin' forward to hearing these new songs once more, in occasion of some other nice gig or as soon as this blessed new record will be released (yeah, I ask myself when? When? They're still makin' it and according to Paolo it seems is coming out really good, so we can't do anything else but confidently waiting'. And me that I hoped that for this spring we could've had it already in our hands :/ ...).
Let's go ahead with "Rachel" and that anthem of "Nightdriver", dedicated by Marco to all those who drove for several kilometres to attend their gig: I think that except the band, nobody has made so many kilometres like me, but luckily it's stil worth going. Among other things, I just wanted to thank very much Cristina for the hospitality (as well as for the extraordinary vision of "Os cavaleiros do templo" and the repeated listenings to "Paris Spleen" of Ataraxia, the cd "Campo di Marte" of Camerata Mediolanense and the beautiful sightseeing tour of Soncino where, just think of it, right at the marvellous Sforzesco castle have been shot some scenes of one of my fave moovies, "Ladyhawke"!) and Fabio 'Day & Nightdriver' for the live pictures you can see here and there, and for giving me the chance to take also part to the Dark Celebration the day after. I hope to make you soon the same favour, guys! And
again some songs taken form "Dopoguerra", that is "Because of you, tonight", with Paolo always big protagonist behind the drums, the title-track itself and "La tregua". The final is getting near and ours keep the unforgettable "Parade of adolescence", but above all the masterly "Sleepwalk in Rome", extraordinarily even more beautiful, intense and exciting, listening after listening, with its final part in crescendo with the Italian verses and the last "They were wed by the sea", which closes the dances. It's very late but unfortunately, even this time, it's already over... No encore as already mentioned some lines above. There is who wants that Marco talks about Rome football team and who hasn't understood yet that he's a Lazio fan instead, who just like me would like him to sing us still something, who didn't know them and start makin' questions about their weird monicker or that however congratulates for their musical proposal, who runs towards the merchandising stall as soon as Davide materializes with the big bag crammed with cds and various t-shirts, waiting that they can come back soon to play on some stage and not always so occasionally, every three or four months, maybe exactly to present the new and long waited record.
