Katatonia & Klimt 1918

16/12/2006 - Budapest (Hungary), Ady Mk

The love for the music drives you mad and so, at 15:30 of Saturday, the 16th of December, I take the flight to Budapest. It's one of those gigs that don't make you sleep the night before, thinking about thousand of possible set-lists: Klimt 1918 and Katatonia, namely my two fave bands.
On my arrival in the Hungarian capital, a cold that here in Italy we haven't been feeling for 50 years by now, is waiting for me, together with a so worrying grey sky reminding me of the cover of the historical record
"Faith" by The Cure: it's a pity that I haven't brought it with me during the travel!
I take the taxi and in half-an-hour I reach the club, pretty like
Circolo Degli Artisti (well known club in Rome for most of the metal gigs of the capital; Mery's note), if it wasn't for a rather big hall, where you can find the bar, merchandising and a lot of cigarettes smoke (other kinds of smoke were expressely forbidden on the back of the ticket for the show... who knows!). I try an immediate drunkenness, but I run into the very kind Davide from Klimt and right afterwards I meet even Paolo who brings my girlfriend and me in the backstage to know Katatonia: I avoid making any comment about this experience; for me the Swedish act is a reason of life. I started playing driven by the listening of "Brave murde day" and the nights spent in playing "Discourages ones" are an unsane habit by now.

At 20:00 starts the performance of Klimt 1918, unfortunately penalized by a very rough organization, moveable drums and vocals boxes just like 'let's make a flying gig at Traffic' (that should be another club of Rome, if I'm not wrong;
Mery's note) and by a short soundcheck, Marco, Klimt 1918to say the least. They start with
"Nightdriver" "Nightdriver" (actually I've been told that they opened their set with "They were wed by the sea" both in Budapest and Belgrade; maybe our Dario was a lil' bit too excited :); Mery's note) not at its best but, I say it again, in those conditions we couldn't pretend more. With the following "Snow of '85" I enter the gig's vibe: that song is so beautiful that I could hear it even from the bog of the club and I would've been touched the same. The show goes on with "Rachel" and the sound gets heavier: the band plays according to the situation and the crowd is Davide, Klimt 1918taking more part. Then it's the turn of "If only you could see me now" taken from "Undressed Momento": if I have to be honest, is the only song of Klimt that I don't like at all (... Dario was definetely too excited: they never played this song, but "That girl", he, he, he :D). Luckily I got better with my fave song "Because of you, tonight"… the voice is finally clean and the song is a masterpiece, half way among The Cure, My Bloody Valentine and U2. It's then the turn of "Parade of adolescence" and I start losing control of myself which becomes a memory with the last "Sleepwalk in Rome". In the end, a great gig to which I would've at least added "Pale song" & "Lomo".  High merit to the Roman band, for having given to those presents a huge proof in difficult conditions: it almost looked like an underground show.

Jonas, KatatoniaIt's all a different story for Katatonia: terrifying basses in power, drums with the box entering the stomach and supercured guitars in direct line. This last choice just mixes too much the voice with the six strings of Blakkheim and Fredrik; it's also true that I was placed too much on the left side, Blakkheim, Katatoniabut it seemed to me being a too much risky choice. It starts with "Leaders" & "Soil's song", ravaging!!!!!! Then it's the turn of  "Deliberation". Katatonia are an institution by now, they try to get continually in touch with the audience who acclaim them, they stop the song half done to hear the rumbling: the attitude is not the same which made me fall in love with them, but it's good like this, they truly deserve all this success. I welcome the announcement of Jonas about "Deadhouse" in tears: my all times fave song that I've particularly liked during this live set, because it's been performed much more cadenced, more similar to the version contained in "Discouraged ones" than that from the dvd released a couple of Mattias, Katatoniayears ago. Will be the same for "Murder". It goes on with the stupend "Tonight's music" & "The future of speech", spaced by "Ghost of the sun" and the useless "July", taken from the last record (what?!? ... guess it's one of the best episodes taken from "The great cold distance"!; Mery's note). The curtain falls (in all senses, considered we're inside a theatre!!!) and rises again with the very expected encore of "My twin", "Evidence" & "Murder", songs that are worth the travel from Rome by themselves anyway. Let's forget about the dancers entered on "My twin"; I hope I won't see anymore things like that. By the way, a beautiful show, even if by now prebuilt and foreseeable from a band who's counted among those who have changed music's history. A monument.
