Klimt1918 means something else for each and every one of their listeners. That is basically because they are not a mainstream band and people do not get to perceive them through the public opinion, no one has pre-conceived or media-created ideas about this band. And so Klimt1918 is a more intimate band in relation to which every listener develops its own personal impressions. I believe this is why they manage to gather up nice crowds at their concerts. For the gig in Cluj, this year on Saturday, the 11th of October, they brought together bunches of friends and people who kind of, sort of knew each other. Because it was meant to be a small concert in a pub, the promotion of the event was made among friends and through friends of friends and so on, so that the evening of the show everyone knew or could've easily guessed about everyone who would've been there. The guys from the band also contributed to this special atmosphere by being kind and open to talk, patient to hear you out and willing to share with you some of their thoughts.
They went up the stage after three Romanian bands: Alternativ Quartet, a young band, quite talented and with good rhythm; Twisted Cables, a delicate music with a clean sound; Luna Amara, one of our best bands ever I think, they have quite a lot of experience playing live and their show was really great.
We kept our excitement though for the headliners... so here comes Klimt1918, live in Cluj. I had been waiting for this since February when the promoter, a long distance friend, had told me about his intentions and plans to have them here in Cluj for a concert. I could haven't been any happier or prouder to be there on that night among friends and with a staff badge in my jeans pocket. They started off with Intro and played along ''The breathtaking days (Via Lactea)'' and did it so well that actually, for a while, I don't even remember hearing the lyrics, being so fascinated by the melody: I must admit it is one of my favourite songs, and I think one of the best out of the new ones. We sang along ''Skygazer'', and then we have been almost taken by surprise because they played ''Snow of '85'' which must be one of their most popular songs, everyone loves it: 'I can't escape from joy'. Mellowing down a little, we heard ''The Graduate'', such an emotional song with clear lines and sweet melody. I think I closed my eyes and kept them like this for I do not recall the image of the band playing this song. The last two lines actually fit to how I and others must have felt: 'You make it hurt so good. I'll stay until the end. I've never asked you for much'. And it could haven't been a better moment for them to play another song with some great instrumental passages and shoegaze riffs and good drums beats: ''Rachel''. I reached absolute joy when they played ''Ghost of a tape listener'', because of the context of my trip to Cluj together with my friends, going to see Klimt1918 live for whom I had been waiting for a couple of years, being there for real and having my brain stuck on: it's all happening, it's all happening – but please don't care if they say I'm off the rail. One of the night's surprises must have been ''Because of you, tonight'', as I really did not expect to hear it live, always thought to be more like a b-side track about this one. ''They were wed by the sea'' is instead an authentic Klimt1918 hit. The first song I ever listened from them was
the rarefied version of this track and I think it is the most representative in terms of rhythm, lyrics and sound. I truly believe everyone felt so alive in that instant. If I had my part of joy with ''Ghost...'', then Maria definetely had her slice of happiness when the guys started playing ''Nightdriver''. We were already fearing the end of the show when the last song from the new record was introduced to us: ''True love is the oldest fear''. This piece sounds differently; I do not know exactly what makes it stand over the others but the accelerating guitars have a certain feel that I find confused and it always troubles me. Maybe it is just the intuition of the end... They came back in our cheering applauses to play ''Parade of adolescence'', the only track on the set-list taken from ''Undressed Momento'' which is my favourite album. I didn't have enough time to realize that they were not going to play anymore, that I would haven't heard ''Undressed Momento'', ''Naif Watercolour'' or ''That Girl''. Then I found out that for Marco those songs represent a time he has lived through and out of and, as addicted music listeners, I think we can understand that sort of feeling quite well actually. Between the songs, some fans from Hungary were screaming and shouting reminding the band of its metal history. Joking and jumping around, Francesco and Davide kept our spirits up during the whole show.
But it wasn't over, as they hadn't left yet: they stayed in the backstage, signing posters, talking to people and always saying 'thanks, you've been a great crowd'. They looked like having fun on the stage. Francesco told us how impressed he was by the audience and especially by the promoter's efforts to have them in Cluj. I really don't know if there is another place in the world, apart from Italy, where they have so much committed people to support them. My friends and I got a poster of the gig for Maria, sharing thoughts, impressions and thanking them for a wonderful time, in a way it was our concert too. Then everyone came back home convinced that this will happen again in a few years time.
And I am already looking forward to it.
