Klimt 1918 "Dopoguerra"

::: Review taken from Lords of Metal no. 47, The Netherlands, April 2005  :::
Style: Alternative/Pop

First we had Vast, then came U2 themselves and now we have Klimt 1918: U2's sound from "Boy – The Unforgettable Fire" is back! Edgy guitar hooks, wide melody lines and light theatrical vocal lines with a fin de siècle feeling in a firm new wave bed. That's the basic thought in the opening track of "They were wed by the sea". Klimt 1918 is Spanish (but you hardly hear this; of course, 'cos they're Italian :D; Mery's note) and also pours a lot of other influences in their music, which might be interesting for the more melancholy orientated metalhead. In "Rachel" the copycat Katatonia's typical guitar sound and melody lines and on the whole album there's a subtle atmosphere that isn't that far away from Anathema, Dan Swanö's Nightingale and others. At the same time a large part of Klimt 1918's repertoire contains nicely played post-rocking guitar walls á la Mogwai ("La Tregua" and "Lomo"), and Marco Soellner's slight androgyne-like vocals steer towards Interpol/Placebo/The Cure. In the nagging "Nightdriver" he is overdoing his pathos (sounds like he ate too much of The Cranberries), the title song is a bit of a simple power ballad (with enjoyable U2-guitar plucking though), but the other songs have nice textures and moods. Even the moments when they have to sing in their native tongue (the only moments you're aware that they're Spanish; that they are Italian :P; Mery's note) are well performed. Yes, this is good musical promotion for the painter Gustav Klimt who died 87 years ago (in case you still haven't figured it out what the name means). The only thing what I don't understand is that this band seemed to be contracted to play at the upcoming Metal Camp 2005 in Slovenia (hmm... I don't think they'll play there anymore, 'coz their monicker isn't included in the bill anywhere; Mery's note). I really have no idea what this band has to do between bands like Slayer, Anthrax, Soulfly and Children Of Bodom. To say it with U2: that might gonna be 'War'.
